Ellis Island
Seeing the Statue of Liberty

Lawrence Meinwald traveled to America from Poland in 1920 and tearfully recalls seeing the Statue of Liberty for the first time. Sara Milanow Rovner when she arrived from Poland in 1925 describes how a young Russian man upon seeing the Statue of Liberty said, “Here’s the beautiful lady! I was waiting all my life to get here–to see her…You see how she’s welcoming us?” He began to cry and so did she. When Lillian Galletta immigrated to the U.S. in 1928 from Italy, she remembers being in the Ellis Island building and her joy when she was finally reunited with her father: “We were so happy to be together. And he said, ‘We’re all together now. We’ll never be apart again.’”
