Conservationist Valmik Thapar discusses the threat that India’s tigers are facing as of 2009 and discusses what can be done to stop the big cats from going extinct. Thapar’s conservation efforts stem from the 1973 Project Tiger mission that began on April 1st and continues to ensure a viable population of tigers in India.

Project Tiger was launched by the government of India under its prime minister, Indira Gandhi in 1973. The project aims at ensuring a viable population of Bengal tigers in their natural habitats and also to protect them from extinction, and preserving areas of biological importance as a natural heritage forever represented as close as possible the diversity of ecosystems across the tiger's distribution in the country.
