U.S. citizen Tom Steinhauer is interviewed by his nephew about seeing Sputnik travel across the night sky in 1957. During the Cold War, the Soviet project was the first artificial Earth satellite that was launched into an elliptical low Earth orbit on October 4, 1957 and lead to the American Sputnik crisis–triggering the great Space Race.
