Omaha Landing Goes Awry: ‘We Were in the Water’

William R. Carl recalls his experience on D-Day as a member of the 18th Infantry’s Cannon Company. They crossed the English Channel from Weymouth Harbour towards Omaha Beach when their landing craft got stuck 270 miles away from the coast. Carl details his 12-day tour such as almost stepping on a minefield and the difficult act of killing two young SS troopers under orders.
