Former NHL player Brad Maxwell played for Herb Brooks with the North Stars and recalls his coaching style. "He was very hard on the younger players. He worked them really hard," Maxwell recalls. He also remembers the excitement people had for the game in 1980 and the excitement people still have for that game. Maxwell played in the NHL for 10 seasons, most with the North Stars.

The United States national team, made up of amateur and collegiate players and led by coach Herb Brooks, defeated the Soviet Union national team, which had won the gold medal in six of the seven previous Olympic games.
