On January 13, 1968, Johnny Cash recorded a live album at Folsom State Prison. Cash had been performing at prisons since the late 1950s. The album reached number one on the country charts in the United States, and was in the top 15 of the national album chart. One of the songs Cash performed on the album, Greystone Chapel, was written by inmate Glenn Shirley. Shirley was unaware at the time of the recording that his song was going to be played. In this video, Shirley’s children, friends and Cash himself remember how Cash came to hear Shirley’s song and decide to perform it.
