I had spent the day at Smithfield Airport, Smithfield, RI, while they worked on a J-3 that I had flown from Plainfield Airport, Plainfield, CT, for routine maintenance. When I returned to Plainfield I noticed some very unusual activity and thought someone had just gotten married but I soon learned that Japan had surrendered! The celebration was unbelievable and continued into the wee hours of the morning. I will never forget that day, VJ-Day!!
