Invasion of Normandy
Getting Wounded on Pegasus Bridge

Trooper Fred Walker, who joined the British Army’s No. 3 Commando unit when he was 16 years old, talks about his participation during the Normandy Invasion–landing on Sword Beach. He explains how when his unit reached Pegasus Bridge, Lord Lovat, a prominent British Commando during World War II, sent out the order: “No one goes across Pegasus Bridge unless you’re wounded or dead.” Within a week of securing the bridge, Walker was wounded and left the battle.
