Stonewall Riots
Author Recalls the Event That Changed LGBT History

Martin Duberman, author of “Stonewall,” remembers the event that catalyzed the modern gay rights movement. The Stonewall Riots on June 28, 1969 were a response to a police raid of the Stonewall Inn, the hub of New York City’s gay night scene. According to Duberman, “for some mysterious reason,” the riots became not only a symbol of resistance, but also a launching pad for a new era of gay rights activism.
