Patricia vander Elst was 21 years old when she was a simultaneous interpreter at the Nuremberg Trials after being recruited whilst a student at the Geneva School of Interpreters. The Nuremberg trials in Nuremberg, Germany began on November 20, 1945 and ended on October 1, 1946 held by Allied forces after World War II for the prosecution of members within the Nazi leadership. Elst was there during the last four months of the trial and she explains how difficult it was to hear about the war crimes: “I was 21 when I started at the trial and I was ten years older when I left”–describing how exposure to the grim and sinister facts of the trials drained her of her youthful innocence.
