“It was so horrible,” said Mick Jagger on watching the footage.
See footage of the Rolling Stones concert at the Altamont, where Meredith Hunter was stabbed to death by a member of Hell’s Angels, who were working security at the show. Hunter, dressed in green at the beginning of the video, pulled a gun and was promptly subdued and repeatedly stabbed by one of the members of Hell’s Angels. Some people felt the murder marked the end of the idealism of the sixties. For Patti Smith, in her award-winning memoir “Just Kids,” the event “punctuated the duality of the summer of 1969, Woodstock and the Manson cult, our masked ball of confusion.” The scene of Hunter’s death became an important portion of the Stone’s film, “Gimme Shelter.”
