Reverend Howard Moody created an underground network of clergy members and abortion providers within the church during the period before abortion was legalized. His first person account explains how his group traveled to different states, researching potential abortion providers to whom ministers and rabbis could refer women in need. In 1973, Roe v. Wade, was a decision passed by the United States Supreme Court regarding abortion. The Court ruled 7–2 that a right to privacy under the due process clause of the 14th Amendment extended to a woman's decision to have an abortion. Women could choose abortion in earlier months of pregnancy without legal restriction, and with restrictions in later months, based on that right to privacy.
