Ralph Cox, the last man cut from the 1980 team, remembers the emotional meeting where Herb Brooks gave him the news. “I said I really have a funny feeling about this team, that you’re going to have a real shot at a medal. I think you can really win the gold medal,” Cox told Brooks. Cox and Brooks would share a strange connection: Brooks had, himself, been the last man cut from the 1960 Olympic team that won a gold medal. The two men later worked together with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
