Sportscaster Jim McKay recalls being off-duty from covering the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, West Germany, when he was quickly ushered back on air to report live on the Munich massacre. He shares stories on what reporting on the crisis was like for him and his crew. To this day, he is surprised by all the people who share their vivid memories of this historical moment with him and believes their salient memories stem from the fact that people “weren’t used to terrorism at that time.” During the two-day crisis from the fifth of September to the sixth, 11 members of the Israeli Olympic team were taken hostage and killed by the Palestinian terrorist group, Black September.
