North Korean defector Hyeonseo Lee describes how she escaped from North Korea in 1997 after witnessing the atrocities committed in her country. She lived as an illegal immigrant in China then sought asylum in South Korea. Lee then speaks of her tumultuous journey trying to get her family out of North Korea as well. She describes the English-speaking stranger who helped her pay the bribes that got her family out of China when they were arrested in China to be returned to North Korea: “He showed me that the kindness of strangers and the support of the international community are truly the rays of hope that the North Korean people need.”
