Byllye Avery, founder of the National Black Women's Health Project, describes what it was like for black women who wanted to end their pregnancy. Her first person account describes what black women had to go through if they did not want to have their child. Doctors said, "I'll give you an abortion, but you have to have a hysterectomy". In 1973, Roe v. Wade, was a decision passed by the United States Supreme Court regarding abortion. The Court ruled 7–2 that a right to privacy under the due process clause of the 14th Amendment extended to a woman's decision to have an abortion. Women could choose abortion in earlier months of pregnancy without legal restriction, and with restrictions in later months, based on that right to privacy.
