On October 14, 2003, the Chicago Cubs and the Florida Marlins were playing Game 6 of the National League Championship Series at Wrigley Field in Chicago. Chicago was up 3-2 in the series and had a 3-0 lead in the game going into the 8th inning. That’s when disaster struck. A foul ball hit off the bat of the Marlin’s Luis Castillo was headed towards the stands, with many fans reaching out to try and catch the ball. Spectator Steve Bartman deflected the ball away from outfielder Moises Alou, who likely would have made the catch for the second out of the inning. Instead, the Marlins went on to score 8 runs in the 8th inning, going on to win both Games 6 and 7 for a trip to the World Series. The “Steve Bartman Incident” was seen as the catalyst for the Cubs eventually losing the series. After Game 6, Bartman had to be escorted from the stadium by security. In this video, fans and reporters recall being at Game 6 and seeing the play and its aftermath.
