Actor Tom Laughlin Over Star Wars' Loss At the Academy

Tom Laughlin, well-known for starring in and directing the Billy Jack movies, quit the Academy due to the fact that Woody Allen won Best Director over George Lucas: "It was a travesty." It was at the 50th Academy Awards on April 3, 1978 that Woody Allen won the Best Director award for his film, Annie Hall, over George Lucas' first Star Wars film. The first Star Wars film, Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, was released on May 25, 1977.
