The 2008 Mumbai Attacks consisted of twelve coordinated shooting and bombing attacks across Mumbai that took place from November 26 to November 29, 2008. The attacks, carried out by Lashkar-e-Taiba, a terrorist group operating out of Pakistan, left 164 people dead and over 300 others wounded. One of the attacks took place at the Taj Mahal Palace and Tower, a hotel just next to the Taj Mahal. In this video, an employee of the hotel, Hussain Rizvi, discusses what it was like for him on the day of the attack. Trapped on the second floor with three American tourists, Rizvi felt it his personal mission to keep the guests alive: “I made one and only one attempt to escape from the smoke. We went through the smoke and when we got to the first floor, we saw the exit was barricaded.” The group then retreated to a pantry on the second floor. When the guests started to panic, Rizvi remembers: “I held the door tightly and I had to avoid them from of course trying anything.”
