In May 2005, Isabelle Dinoire was mauled by her dog, leaving her with severe injuries to her face. She became the first person to receive a partial face transplant, which was performed in Amiens, France, on November 27, 2005. In this video, Dinoire’s surgeon, Dr. Bernard Devauchelle, discusses why a face transplant was necessary: “This type of tissue loss requires this type of treatment. Everything else is just a makeshift solution. There is no real solution… The best way, the only way to fix it is with a face transplant. The only thing that came up for discussion was that maybe our idea was a bit crazy. Were we going to go all the way with this since it was the first time this opportunity had arisen?”
The first full facial transplant was performed in Spain in 2010.
