Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel are childhood friends who went on to form one of the most popular American folk rock duos of the 1960s. In this video, Paul Simon discusses his relationship with Art Garfunkel, saying: “Periodically, we got on each other’s nerves. When I say periodically I mean, if we’re together than every day, probably. It has a flow to it, and in a performance situation if you don’t experience nerves in the typical butterflies-in-your-stomach type of nervousness, it comes out in some way and it just… you know, I guess you get on each other’s nerves because your nerves are heightened.” Of the duration of their friendship, Simon says: “I’ve known Art since I’m 10 years old. So, I think we’ve developed our own style of disagreement. It’s a very subtle way of irritating the other person. I must also add that we laugh a lot, and it’s a very very long relationship. It’s the longest relationship that I have in my life… It’s really odd to know somebody for that long.”
