John Devens Jr. describes how in trying to meet impossible quotas for cleaning the Exxon Valdez oil spill, he was nearly caught illegally disposing oil after they had proclaimed the project done. He also explains how cleaning a beach often meant pretending to clean a beach that had never been exposed to the oil spill just to reach these impractical expectations. On March 24, 1989 the Exxon Valdez oil tanker struck Prince William Sound's Bligh Reef and spilled 260,000 to 750,000 barrels of crude oil over the course of several days.
