As told by: Om (Aunt) Ear

“After the coup many people from the village joined the Khmer Rouge to fight against the new government…While the government had squashed this uprising, it was only the beginning of the civil war.”

The Lon Nol coup occurred on March 18, 1970. My uncle Om Ngat, and his wife, Om Ear were living in Takeo Province, Bati District in Chambak Commune. While my mother recalls the streets of Phnom Penh being very quiet that day, my aunt remembers a violent uprising in Chambak Commune in the subsequent days. I interviewed my aunt as she recalls tensions in her village soon afterwards and how the Khmer Rouge grew in her commune as a result:

Wat Ansung. 2013. Source: ©Banyanblog.

On March 18, 1970 I was living in Takeo Province, Bati District in Chambak Commune. We owned a small shop in our house. We lived in the same house your mother grew up in, which was across the street from Wat Ansung (Ansung Pagoda). We didn’t know that there had been a coup in Phnom Penh. We didn’t hear the announcement because there weren’t many TVs or radios in our village at the time.

A few days afterwards we heard rumors from Phnom Penh that something big had happened, that the government had removed Prince Sihanouk from power. Some villagers said they later heard a message from Prince Sihanouk on the radio telling the people to rise against the enemies and go to the maquis to fight the government. At that point I knew there would be trouble because people in the village adored Prince Sihanouk. They were fiercely loyal to him and would die for him.

Soon after, perhaps that day or the next day, massive protests in Chambak commune broke out. It started in the afternoon when a group of people marched to Salah Temnah Kong Eng and took down a picture of Prince Sihanouk. The commune officials from the Chambak Salah Srok tried to prevent the villagers from doing so, but the people wouldn’t listen. They took the picture down and carried it to Wat Ansung, which was about two kilometers from the Salah Srok. Wat Ansung became the central meeting place for the protestors. Since our house was right in front of the pagoda and we had a shop, people would come and buy things, and ask for Om Ngat, who was well known in the village. They wanted him to come out and protest with them. I told them he wasn’t home, that he was out playing football (soccer) by Tonle Bati.

Norodom Sihanouk. 1983. Source: Anefo, Dutch National Archives.

Towards the evening more and more people gathered at the pagoda. By this time your uncle came back. Then there was a knock at our door. This time the protestors wanted our megaphone to make announcements to rally the people. We gave it to them but told them we didn’t know how to use it since we had rented it from someone else. They took it and left us alone for the night.

The next morning, more and more people came to our village. Droves of people were marching from as far as Phnom Chiso and they all gathered at Wat Ansung. The crowd got so large that the pagoda couldn’t fit everyone. There was an overflow of people and many of them stood in front of our house. I was scared. Your uncle was on his way to Phnom Penh to buy things for the shop and I was at home with your grandfather Kong Sreng and the children. Kong Sreng saw more and more people coming down the road carrying machetes. They were a rabble-rousing crowd. He told me to close the door. He was afraid that the protestors were drunk, would become violent and would burn down the house. I closed the doors to the house.

Later that morning villagers at the pagoda turned into a massive mob and knocked on our door again looking for Om Ngat. They went from house to house telling people to come out and protest. In some cases they threatened to burn the house down. I told them he wasn’t home that he had gone to Phnom Penh. Shortly after I heard a noise in the back of our house. It was Om Ngat who snuck by the protestors. I let him in the back door. He told me he didn’t make it to Phnom Penh. The government had closed the roads going into the city. On his way back someone at the market told him that he needed to rush home because the mob was going to burn down his house.

The crowd had swelled to the hundreds, if not thousands, by the late morning. They left Wat Ansungand marched with the picture of the Prince to the hospital and then to the Salah Srok. There must have been thousands of people marching, wielding knives and machetes and screaming at the top of their lungs Jay-yo Samdach (Victory Prince). The workers at the Salah Srok must have been scared from the day before and called for help from Takeo Province. Earlier that day two big trucks carrying soldiers came. They stood in front of the Salah Srok waiting for the protestors.

<img class="size-full wp-image-48340 " src="http://witnify.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/600px-Banner_of_the_Communist_Party_of_Kampuchea.svg_.png" alt="Flag used by Khmer Rouge during their 1975 campaign. This design was replaced soon after their victory. Source: Creative Commons.

The Salah Srok was the final confrontation, soldiers against the angry mob. Even with the soldiers there carrying their guns, the protestors did not disperse. They were not intimidated. The soldiers warned them but the people wouldn’t move. The people were defiant, they yelled Jay-yo Samdach, Jay-yo Samdach! Then it turned violent. The soldiers started shooting people indiscriminately. The crowd had scattered. I heard the shots and saw people running past our house screaming. I was terrified. Suddenly it was silent. The protestors went home. Eight people had died that day. Later in the afternoon the soldiers left. In the evening people went back to the Salah Srok to pick up the dead bodies to take to the hospital.

In the following days, I had heard that Khieu Samphan (a high ranking Khmer Rouge official) and some Khmer Rouge soldiers came to the village and setup a makeshift medical treatment area to tend to the wounded. The people who had protested were grateful to the Khmer Rouge for their help. We reopened the shop following the protests and people would buy food, alcohol and medicine for the Khmer Rouge soldiers. After the coup many people from the village joined the Khmer Rouge to fight against the new government. That is how they grew in numbers in our commune. While the government had squashed this uprising, it was only the beginning of the civil war.

*All events are recalled to the best ability and any misstatements are unintentional*

The El Mozote Massacre took place in El Mozote, El Salvador, on December 11, 1981. The Salvadorian Army killed more than 800 civilians. Only one person, Rufina Amaya, survived the massacre. In this video, she recalls the day the massacre took place, saying: “They took me at about five in the afternoon. Only a few women and kids remained by this point. They took my four children from my arms. It took two soldiers because obviously I didn’t want to let them go. When I reached the end of the line, the women in front of me screamed and cried and asked from the heart to be saved and to be taken to San Miguel or Goter. They asked to be saved, but the soldiers didn’t listen. So when I saw the women begging for their lives and still being killed, I got on my knees in the dirt almost at the feet of the soldiers. I asked G-d to forgive me or save me. During the prayer I found a hiding place. There was a mound of wire, some branches and a small apple tree. I crawled in between those things and I put the branches over my feet to not be seen. I succeeded in staying there.”

On December 20, 1989, the United States Armed Forces invaded Panama in Operation Just Cause. As a result of the invasion, dictator Manuel Noriega was deposed, the Panamanian Defense Force dissolved, and president-elect Guillermo Endara was sworn into office. The U.S. relationship with Noriega had started out on a more positive note, with Noriega becoming a paid informant of the Central Intelligence Agency in 1967, and siding with the U.S. over the USSR in Central American affairs. In the mid-1980s, the relationship between the U.S. and Noriega began to turn, and in 1989 Noriega declared Panama’s presidential election null and maintained power by force. In this video, President George H.W. Bush announces the invasion of Panama and explains why it is happening: “For nearly two years, the United States, the nations of Latin America and the Caribbean have have worked together to resolve the crisis in Panama. The goals of the United States have been: to safe guard the lives of Americans, to defend Democracy in Panama, to combat drug trafficking ,and to protect the integrity of the Panama Canal treaty. Many attempts have been made to resolve this crisis through diplomacy and negotiations. All were rejected by the dictator of Panama, General Manuel Noriega, an indicted drug trafficker. Last Friday, Noriega declared his military dictatorship to be at a state of war with the United States and publicly threatened the lives of Americans in Panama.”

In this video, Fleming recalls November 26, 1968, the day that earned him his Medal of Honor, saying: “These guys down there have seen one helicopter crash, one of them leave trailing smoke, other helicopter’s leaving. I’m the only one here. Get me low, way out. Throw me in there. I bet ya I can sneak in there and get them.”

Fleming was presented the Medal of Honor by President Richard Nixon at the White House on May 14, 1970.

The My Lai Massacre took place on March 16, 1968, when members of the U.S. Army killed between 347 and 504 unarmed civilians in the South Vietnam hamlets of My Lai and My Khe. Hugh Thompson Jr. was a helicopter pilot for the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. On the day of the massacre, Thompson and his crew were flying over My Lai when they saw a U.S. soldier shoot a woman. Thompson landed his helicopter between villagers and soldiers, and he and his crew dismounted and threatened to shoot the U.S. soldiers if they did not stop. Thompson then went on to report the massacre to his superiors. In this video, Thompson Jr. recalls the day of the massacre. When asked how he can explain soldiers doing what they did in My Lai, he responds: “When the leadership that allows them to do it. Negative peer pressure. Prejudice. Fear. Not everybody on the ground that day took part in it. We put I think somewhere around 190 people on the ground. Only somewhere between thirteen and eighteen I’ve been told actually took part in what was going on. The others didn’t do anything to stop it, just kind of turned the other way. You know, they knew what was going on.”

Paul Hackett was a Storekeeper 2nd class on the USS Mindanao when the ammunition ship USS Mount Hood exploded on November 10, 1944. All crew members aboard the USS Mount Hood that day were killed in the explosion. The Mindanao was only 350 yards away from Mount Hood at the time of the blast. Recalls Hackett: “It was a beautiful day and we were getting ready for the weekly captain’s inspection of the ship. At approximately 8:50 there was a terrible explosion. I thought we’d been torpedoed.” Of seeing the damage, Hackett says: “The Mount Hood was a 14,000 ton cargo ship which was taken and assumed by the navy sometime around July 1st of ’44, and it was carrying somewhere in the neighborhood of four thousand tons of various explosives, ammunition. And when the dust covered the ship had just completely disintegrated and the pieces they found out of it, the largest was a 10′x16′ sheet of steel.”

Pat Tillman, born November 6, 1976, was a professional American football player and soldier in the United States Army. Tillman gave up a lucrative NFL career in order to enlist in the United States Army in June, 2002, following the September 11 attacks. Tillman was killed while serving in Afghanistan on April 22, 2004. While the Army first reported that Tillman had been killed by enemy fire, it was later revealed that was the victim of friendly fire. In this video, fellow soldier Specialist Bryan O’Neal testifies about the day that Tillman was killed. O’Neal recalls: “Before he was able to finish telling me what our plan was, we had started to receive fire from a GMV. AT first, it was short, sporadic. We didn’t really – I didn’t really understand what was happening. I looked and saw that it was friendly fire coming towards us. Pat asked me basically what was going on, and I let him know. It didn’t take long before those in the GMF who were stopped at the time, to dismount and open up on us with the 50-calibur machine gun and the 240-bravo machine gun.”

Early on October 25, 1983, the United States led an invasion of the Caribbean island of Grenada. It was the first major military action taken by the United States since the Vietnam War. The mission was known as Operation Urgent Fury, and was undertaken by the US for a few reasons: the murder of the Grenada’s leader Maurice Bishop, general instability in a country in close geographic proximity to the United States and the presence of US citizens at Grenada’s medical school at St. George’s University.

In this video, one of these medical students speaks about the first day of the invasion, including going to the hospital to attend to the wounded. Of conditions at the hospital, he says: “I saw approximately about 30 wounded. Of these 30 wounded, about two or three have died. The others have gone through surgery and are presently stable.

My work pretty much consisted of trying to maintain an order, some kind of order along with the other physicians there. That is, provide some services such as continuing IV fluids, blood, antibiotics, and organization for what was a totally unequipped hospital to deal with this emergency. Using CentralReach Managed Billing Services can also help with billing and administrative tasks, letting us focus more on patient care. In addition, here on this website you can compare medical assistant schools in Texas. The hospital, we didn’t have an Xray services, we have hardly any oxygen, only had 5 pints of blood during this whole period and hardly any antibiotics except for a few.” The invasion, considered to be a violation of International Law by the United Nations, resulted in a US victory after just a couple of weeks.

See this never before shown footage of the SS Normandie (aka The Lafayette) as she burns in New York Harbor. The SS Normandie, a French-built ocean liner, began service in 1935 as the largest and fastest passenger ship in operation. The Normandie is still considered to be the most powerful steam turbo-electric-propelled passenger ship ever built. Shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor, US authorities seized the Normandie while it was at port in New York, renaming it the USS Lafayette. The plan was to convert the Normandie to a troopship, however it caught fire in 1942 and capsized. Restoration of the Normandie was considered to be too costly. This video tells the story of the Normandie, including pictures of both its exterior and interior during the time that it was a passengers ship, as well as video of the fire. The original footage was shot by Frank Hardart, an executive at the Horn and Hardart company, from a nearby rooftop.

Video Produced and Edited by: Alex Schein.

Admiral Grace Hopper joined the U.S. Navy in 1944 at the age of 37. She was one of the first programmers of the Harvard Mark I computer and wrote the first compiler for a computer programming language. When asked by Letterman how she knew so much about computers then, Hopper responds: “I didn’t. It was the first one”. In this video, Admiral Hopper explains to David Letterman what a nanosecond is: “When an admiral asks you why it takes so damn long to send a message via satellite, you point out to him that between here and the satellite there are a very large number of nanoseconds”.
