In this Legacy Project interview from 2006 with Raymond Aubrac, a leader of the French Resistance, he describes his efforts to oppose Nazi Germany’s occupation of France during World War II. He says of his brave peers in the Resistance: “That’s very amazing to consider–all these people were volunteers. Nobody had been forced into that kind of action. Even when it became dangerous…they stayed.” Aubrac discusses that he was stationed in Straberg near the Rhine River as a soldier in the French army. In June of 1940, Aubrac reveals how he was nearly handed over to the German army as a prisoner of war, yet he was thankfully able to return to France with the help of his friends. Aubrac mentions that he then joined a movement against the German influence in France and he was able to produce and distribute underground newspapers. Aubrac says he had wished to move to the United States during the 1940s yet abandoning the resistance efforts would have betrayed his belief in solidarity.

In this interview, a veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom, John Teetz, discusses the impact that his military service had on his relationships and his personality. Teetz describes that the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks occurred while he was still in training yet this event made him more driven in his mental preparation for war. Once Teetz was stationed outside of Baghdad for reconnaissance, the friends he made amongst fellow soldiers became the best part of his Iraq experience. Teetz also credits his involvement in the United States military for making him a more responsible man.

In this segment from “Althea Gibson: A Documentary,” Gibson is praised for becoming the first black woman to win the U.S. Open Women’s Singles Championship and Wimbledon in 1957. Fellow tennis players, such as Dr. Harold Freeman, discuss how Gibson’s triumphs were exceptional because tennis was previously offered exclusively to wealthy white people. Billie Jean King, another tennis player, explains how Gibson had to deal with the harsh racial climate of the ’50s and yet it did not affect her athletic prowess on the court. Gibson’s accomplishments broke boundaries for black athletes, and she became a symbol for the civil rights movements.

In this interview with MAKERS, a project that speaks with influential women in America, Madeleine Albright describes how she was asked to be the first female Secretary of State. Albright recalls that Erskine Bowles, the then White House Deputy Chief of Staff, asked her if she was interested in the position. Albright reveals that the decision to take on the duty was easy but she was nervous that President Bill Clinton would choose somebody else. She remembers how she was anxious and doubtful of Clinton’s decision to choose her on the morning he was supposed to call. When the call finally came, Albright describes it as “a completely magical moment.”

Kikue Shiota shares her experience on surviving the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, Japan on August 6, 1945 by the U.S. during World War II. At the time of the atomic bombing, Shiota was 21 years old and she was two kilometers away from the center of the attack. Shiota recalls that a shocking, bright light overwhelmed Hiroshima and an oily black rain shortly followed. That day, Shiota and her younger sister had to travel amongst piles of corpses and burning buildings in order to find her missing siblings. The two found their brother with the skin of his legs dragging behind him and they found their sister’s clothes burned into the road.

In this analysis of the 2009 Iranian Election, Christiane Amanpour, a correspondent for CNN, discusses the favorability of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s candidacy because of his campaigning efforts. Amanpour describes how Ahmadinejad had overwhelming support because he traveled around Iran to rural areas among the poor populations in the country. As a result of Ahmadinejad’s popularity with the voters, Amanpour reports that there would be no real fear of cheating or rigging. However, the election did encounter some fraud charges and protests for reform because the “clerical elite” had the power to contest the election. Amanpour described that even though the opposition threatens Ahmadinejad’s re-election, Ahmadinejad is supported by his Iranian people to serve a second term as president.

In this NBC interview with Ann Curry, President Hassan Rouhani of Iran reflects on the policies of his predecessor, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. During his two-term presidency, Ahmadinejad shocked and scared some western audiences when he made claims that the Holocaust was a myth. President Rouhani addresses Ahmadinejad’s previous claims by stating that he himself is not a historian and therefore does not have a place to comment on the subject. Curry also asked President Rouhani about Ahmadinejad’s beliefs about “wiping Israel off the map.” Rouhani responded to this formerly aggressive stance on foreign policy by stating that Iran seeks peace and friendship with neighboring countries.

This video reveals the rescued photographs of the late former first lady of Argentina Eva Perón, which were taken by Alfredo Mazzorotlo during the last six years of Perón’s life. Mazzorotlo’s photographs depict Perón at different ceremonies, on various trips, and in private meetings. The photographer’s daughter, Maria Teresa Mazzorotola explains that her father chose to bury the photographs for nearly twenty years because he feared they would be lost or damaged. Maria Teresa describes that it was necessary to protect these photographs because Eva Perón was an incredibly influential political yet controversial figure in Argentinian political history.

Bhutto’s daughters, Bakhtawar and Asifa, recall how Bhutto believed that her life was in God’s hands now and how she was prepared to die. Asifa thinks that Bhutto understood the risks of returning to Rawalpindi, Pakistan in December but Bhutto returned anyway–she needed to support her people. Her husband, Asif Ali Zardari, explains how he begged Bhutto not to go back Rawalpindi because they knew it would be too dangerous. The family is understandably emotional in their descriptions of their last days with her and they clearly all understand why she had to leave for her ill-fated trip.
