Trayvon Martin was 17-years-old when he was fatally shot by George Zimmerman in Sanford, Florida. On the evening of February 26, 20012, Martin had travelled with his father to visit his father’s fiancee. Martin went out to purchase some items from a convenience store. On his way home, Zimmerman, a member of the community watch, spotted him and called Sanford police. Although he was told not to, Zimmerman followed Martin, resulting in an altercation between the two in which Martin was shot in the chest. On February 22, 1974, Samuel Byck attempted to hijack a plane flying out of Baltimore/Washington International Airport in the hopes of crashing it into the White House and killing U.S. President Richard Nixon. Byck first got attention from the Secret Service in 1972, when he threatened Nixon for the first time. Byck was upset that the Small Business Administration had turned him down for a loan. The Secret Service considered Byck to be harmless and no action was taken against him. On the day of the attempted hijacking and assassination, Byck carried a .22 caliber revolver he stole from a friend, as well as a homemade bomb of gasoline and an igniter. At the airport, Byck killed Maryland Aviation Administration Police Officer George Neal Ramsburg and pilot Fred Jones. Pilot Reese Loftin was also shot but survived. After a standoff, Anne Arundel County Police stormed the plane and wounded Byck, who committed suicide before police could apprehend him. Byck kept audio recordings of his motives and plans, clips of which are compiled in this video.

The Orangeburg massacre took place on February 8, 1968, when a group of about 150 protestors from South Carolina State University had gathered to protest racial segregation at the local bowling alley. South Carolina Highway Patrol Officers responded to the scene and opened fire on protestors, killing three and wounding another twenty-eight. The three protestors who passed were Samuel Hammond, Henry Smith and Delano Middleton. The nine officers brought up on charges following the shooting were all acquitted. On February 4, 1999, four plain-clothed New York City police officers shot and killed 23-year old Amadou Diallo, an immigrant from Guinea. Diallo was standing outside of his apartment in The Bronx when the officers fired a total of 41 shots, striking Diallo 19 times. Diallo was unarmed at the time of the shooting, and protests and demonstrations erupted in outrage. In this video, both Amadou Diallo’s father and the Revered Al Sharpton speak at one of these demonstrations. The officers were charged with second-degree murder and acquitted following a trial in Albany, New York.

Boko Haram is a terrorist organization with a base of operations in northeastern Nigeria. In April of 2014, Boko Haram kidnapped 276 girls from a town called Chinok in northeast Nigeria. More than 50 of the girls were able to escape, but the remainder still have not been released. In this video, Deborah Peters, a Boko Haram survivor who is from the same village as the abducted girls, speaks about losing her family to Boko Haram. Peters, whose father was a Christian pastor in the village, says: “My dad refused to deny his faith and so then they shoot him three times in his chest.”

Patrice Lumumba was the first democratically elected Prime Minister of the Republic of the Congo (now known as the Democratic Republic of the Congo). Lumumba played a part in winning his country’s independence from Belgium in 1960. Within months, Lumumba’s government was deposited in a coup, and Lumumba was imprisoned and later executed on January 17, 1961. Many western nations, including Belgium, the United States and the United Kingdom have been accused of involvement in Lumumba’s death. The Sierra Leone Civil War began in March of 1991, when Charles Taylor sent his special forces into the country from Liberia in an attempt to overthrow the government of Joseph Momoh. The civil war would go on for eleven years, leaving over 50,000 people dead. Child soldiers were a common feature of the civil war. In this video, a former child soldier discusses how he was captured by forces and what his days were like. The Sierra Leone Civil War was declared over on January 18, 2002.
