Joseph Goebbels secretary recalls what he was like in the office in the forthcoming film A German Life. Goebbels was Hitler’s minister of a Propaganda. It was on November 16, 1941 that Goebbels released his “screed of hate,” in the German magazine Das Reich that “The Jews wanted the war, and now they have it”—referring to the Nazi propaganda scheme to shift the blame for the world war onto European Jewry, thereby giving the Nazis a rationalization for the so-called Final Solution.

A veteran of the 737 Bomb Squadron in the 454 Bombardment Group in the U.S. Air Force during World War II, Lambert R. (Bobby) Walker recalls a mission through a flack zone.  Leaving Yale early, Walker was deployed to Europe where he flew in 35 missions. Trying to navigate away from the flack zone, he was unaware that the entire squadron was following him. “If I was gonna get in the soup, I was really gonna get in the soup.”

World War II Veteran Lambert R. (Bobby) Walker recalls his entry into WW II.  Leaving Yale early, he was deployed to Europe where he flew in 35 missions as part of the 737 Bomb Squadron in the 454th Bombardment Group.  Walker, like all of his contemporaries, knew he was going to be in the War.  Leaving Yale University for New York City, he boarded an old German reparations transport to Europe. The trip took about 11 days and his convoy broke up, taking him up the Irish Sea to Liverpool. There he got an explosive entry into World War II.

Mildred Gillars was an American actress who was employed by the Third Reich in Nazi Germany to broadcast propaganda during World War II. Along with Rita Zucca, Gillars was nicknamed “Axis Sally”. Gillars was captured in Berlin following the end of the war, and was convicted of treason in the United States and sentenced to prison on March 8, 1949. Merrill’s Marauders were a special operations jungle warfare unit of the United States Army during World War II. The Marauders were organized as light infantry assault units who fought in South-East Asia, and were known for engaging Japanese forces behind Japanese lines. On February 24, 1944, the force began a 1,000 mile march that led them over the Patkai region of the Himalayas and into the Burmese jungle behind Japanese lines. In spite of the fact that they were almost always outnumbered, the Marauders managed to inflict more casualties than they suffered. Of the 2,750 Marauders who entered Burma, however, only two managed to avoid hospitalization for a wound or major illness. In this video, Joseph Robinson recalls his time as one of Merrill’s Marauders.

On February 8, 1942, Japan invaded Singapore, capturing the city-state on February 15, 1942. Singapore was the major British military base in South-East Asia. The capture of Singapore by the Japanese led to the largest surrender of British-led military personnel in history, making 80,000 troops prisoners of war. In this video, British military vet Ernest Warwick recalls being in Singapore when the Japanese invaded, and talks about what happened to him once he was captured.

During World War II, Raoul Wallenberg, a Swedish businessman and diplomat, saved the lives of tens of thousands of Jews living in Nazi-occupied Hungary. While working as Sweden’s special envoy in Budapest from July to December of 1944, Wallenberg issued protective passports and sheltered Jews in buildings designated as Swedish territory. On January 17, 1945, Wallenberg was arrested by the Soviets and disappeared.

Operation Anthropoid was the code name for the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich, who was the head of the security services of Nazi Germany and was in charge of carrying out the Final Solution and Holocaust of the Jews in Europe. Preparations for the operation began on December 28, 1941, and the operation was carried out in Prague on May 27, 1942. Initially wounded in the attack, Heydrich later died of his injuries.
