A truck bomb was detonated below the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York City on February 26, 1993. The explosion killed six people and injured over a thousand. In March 1994, four men were convicted of carrying out the bombing, including charges of conspiracy and explosive destruction of property. In November 1997, two more men were convicted, including Ramzi Youself, who had masterminded the bombings. This video hears from several people who were in the World Trade Center on the day of the bombing as they speak about the moment the bomb was detonated.

On February 12, 1994, two men broke into Norway’s National Gallery in Oslo and stole Edvard Munich’s painting The Scream. The painting had been moved to a second-story gallery as part of the festivities for the Winter Olympics, which had opened in Lillehammer, Norway, on the same day. The National Gallery refused to pay the one million dollar ransom asked of them, and instead worked with British police and the Getty Museum to set up a sting. The painting was recovered undamaged on May 7, 1994. In this video, art detective Charles Hill talks about going undercover to find and retrieve The Scream.

Deep Blue was a computer created by IBM to play chess. On February 10, 1996, Deep Blue played the top chess player in the world at that time, grandmaster Garry Kasparov in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Deep Blue won the first game between the two, however Kasparov came back to win the match by winning three games and drawing two. In this video, IBM scientists discuss the difficulties in creating a computer that could play chess as well as, if not better than, a human.

John Starks was a guard in the National Basketball Association who spent most of his career with the New York Knicks in the 1990s. Starks faced Michael Jordan in more playoff games than almost any other player, with the exception of Isaiah Thomas. In this video, Starks talks about what it was like to play against Jordan: “You already know when you’re going into a game against Michael Jordan and a Michael Jordan team that you have to play your very best in order to beat him. At some point in that game you know that he’s going to take over the game and you have to be able to play him as hard as possible.”

On February 4, 1999, four plain-clothed New York City police officers shot and killed 23-year old Amadou Diallo, an immigrant from Guinea. Diallo was standing outside of his apartment in The Bronx when the officers fired a total of 41 shots, striking Diallo 19 times. Diallo was unarmed at the time of the shooting, and protests and demonstrations erupted in outrage. In this video, both Amadou Diallo’s father and the Revered Al Sharpton speak at one of these demonstrations. The officers were charged with second-degree murder and acquitted following a trial in Albany, New York.

In 1985, Terry Anderson, a journalist with the Associated Press, was taken hostage by Hezbollah militants in Lebanon. Anderson was held for six years and nine months, before finally being released on December 4, 1991. In this video, Anderson and his wife discuss his time in captivity. When asked if his years in captivity could be divided up by phases, Anderson says: “I guess you could say that. You could look at it that way. I mean, the first few months of shock and frustration and anger and bitterness and just trying to grapple with what had happened, and trying to devise ways to handle it. To get your mind around it. To deal with it. And then there was a long period of being with other hostages in which we used each other. We leaned on each other and used each other’s minds and began to… learn the techniques and the attitudes that were necessary to survive.”
