On March 7, 1965, a group of around 600 marchers left Selma, Alabama, on a march to Alabama’s capital, Montgomery, as part of the Selma Voting Rights Movement. Shortly after leaving Selma, the unarmed marchers were attacked on the Edmund Pettus Bridge by state troopers with tear gas and billy clubs. The day became known as “Bloody Sunday”. In this video, Selma resident and civil rights activist Betty Miles recalls how she and other activists prepared for the march, as well as what happened on Bloody Sunday.

On February 20, 1962, John Glenn became the first American to orbit the earth, completing three orbits in just under five hours. Glenn orbited the earth as part of the Mercury Seven, who were a group of military test pilots selected by NASA in 1959 to become the first astronauts. Glenn went on to resign from NASA and in 1974 was elected to the Senate from his home state of Ohio, where he served until 1999. This video shows live footage from Glenn’s historic mission, including some radio transmissions between Glenn and mission control.

The Orangeburg massacre took place on February 8, 1968, when a group of about 150 protestors from South Carolina State University had gathered to protest racial segregation at the local bowling alley. South Carolina Highway Patrol Officers responded to the scene and opened fire on protestors, killing three and wounding another twenty-eight. The three protestors who passed were Samuel Hammond, Henry Smith and Delano Middleton. The nine officers brought up on charges following the shooting were all acquitted. In this video, survivors of the Orangeburg Massacre describe the incident.

On January 30, 1969, The Beatles gave their final live performance from the rooftop of Apple Records in London, England. The concert was a surprise and lasted 42 minutes. The concert was recorded for the 1970 documentary film Let It Be, and the Beatles played nine takes of five songs. In this video, one of the police officers sent to shut down the concert remembers getting to witness the concert, saying: “And despite my instructions to arrest The Beatles along with my colleagues, no one was ever going to do that because to have done so would have ended perhaps what would become the greatest concert that ever happened”.

He produced all of The Stones’s albums from 1963 to 1967 and is credited with promoting an image for The Rolling Stones to contrast that of The Beatles. Oldham’s relationship with The Rolling Stones became strained due to his drug use and the band’s legal problems, and he stopped managing the band in 1967.
