Jane Goodall and Michael Aufhauser remember how they brought chimpanzees in need of rescue to Aufhauser’s Animal Sanctuary in Austria. In a rare, unscripted moment, we see Goodall retain the dignity and eloquence of her copious public videos while laughing and joking candidly; in turn, we see Aufhauser’s admiration and warmth towards Goodall. He says he “never would have dared” hold chimpanzees in his sanctuary if it were not for Goodall believing in him. Goodall says that because of him, the chimps were rescued and allowed to stay in a German-speaking country, a language and culture that they recognized.

As Goodall’s program, Roots and Shoots, spreads into China, her message of conservation and peace spreads and the number of her followers increases. Tori Zwisler, chair of the board of the Shanghai Roots and Shoots program, explains how meeting Goodall changed her path in life. Roots and Shoots staff member Greg Maclsaac explains how he promised Goodall would visit all the schools that began the Roots and Shoots programs and Goodall decided to honor that promise. Corazon Aquino became the 11th President of the Philippines, and the first female President in Asia, on February 25, 1986. Aquino came to power following the 20-year authoritarian rule of President Ferdinand Marcos, helping to restore democracy to the Philippines. Aquino’s rise to presidency began with tragedy. Aquino’s husband, Senator Benigno Aquino, Jr., was a staunch critic of President Marcos who was assassinated on August 21, 1983, following a return from exile in the United States. At the time of her husband’s death, Corazon Aquino was a self-proclaimed “plain housewife” who was raising the couple’s five children. In this video, Aquino discusses how she made her decision to run for President. Aquino passed away from colon cancer on August 1, 2009. Her son, Benigno Aquino III, has been President of the Philippines since June 30, 2010.

Betty Friedan was an American writer and activist, best known for initiating the second wave of American feminism in the 20th century with the release of her book The Feminine Mystique in 1963. In 1966, Friedan founded and was elected to be the first president of the National Organization for Women (NOW). In February of 2015, author Harper Lee announced that she would be publishing a second novel, Go Set A Watchman, which would be a sequel to her famous work To Kill A Mockingbird. To Kill A Mockingbird won the Pulitzer Prize in 1960, and until this announcement was the only novel ever published by Lee. To Kill A Mockingbird deals with the racism she observed growing up in Monroeville, Alabama. In this video, author Wally Lamb and documentary film maker Mary Murphy, who produced a documentary on Lee, speak about what the announcement of a second novel means to them.

Eileen Collins is a retired NASA astronaut and retired United States Air Force colonel who became the first female pilot and first female commander of a Space Shuttle. On February 3, 1995, Collins piloted the space shuttle Discovery from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida as part of mission STS-63. Collins later served as commander of mission STS-93 in July 1999 and mission STS-114 in July of 2005. In this video, Collins talks about her childhood dream of being a pilot and how she worked to achieve that dream, as well as what it meant to be the first female shuttle pilot.
