A truck bomb was detonated below the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York City on February 26, 1993. The explosion killed six people and injured over a thousand. In March 1994, four men were convicted of carrying out the bombing, including charges of conspiracy and explosive destruction of property. In November 1997, two more men were convicted, including Ramzi Youself, who had masterminded the bombings. This video hears from several people who were in the World Trade Center on the day of the bombing as they speak about the moment the bomb was detonated.

John Walker Lindh is an American citizen who was captured in Afghanistan in November 2001 as an enemy combatant. Lindh was brought back to the United States on January 23, 2002 and stood trial in United States federal count in February 2002. Lindh took a plea bargain and was sentenced to 20 years in prison without parole. Daniel Pearl was a journalist with both American and Israeli citizenship who was kidnapped by Pakistani militants on January 23, 2002, and later murdered by Al-Qaeda. At the time of his kidnapping, Pearl was working as the South Asia Bureau Chief of The Wall Street Journal and was based in Mumbai, India. He had travelled to Pakistan to investigate links between Richard Reid and Al-Qaeda. Boko Haram is a terrorist organization with a base of operations in northeastern Nigeria. In April of 2014, Boko Haram kidnapped 276 girls from a town called Chinok in northeast Nigeria. More than 50 of the girls were able to escape, but the remainder still have not been released. In this video, Deborah Peters, a Boko Haram survivor who is from the same village as the abducted girls, speaks about losing her family to Boko Haram. Peters, whose father was a Christian pastor in the village, says: “My dad refused to deny his faith and so then they shoot him three times in his chest.”

The Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), also known as the Lord’s Resistance Movement, is a militant movement led by Joseph Kony whose goals include ruling Uganda according to the Ten Commandments. The group’s activities have also spilled into the Democratic Republic of Congo, Central African Republic, and Sudan. The group has been accused of many human rights violations, including murder, abduction, mutilation, and child slavery. In this video, residents of the Democratic Republic of Congo speak about what life has been like since the Lord’s Resistance Army has begun operating in and around their villages. In the area affected by the LRA, agriculture is the main activity. Says one resident: “We can no longer go out of town to our fields, or access the most fertile land. So we can only grow food in small gardens surrounding our houses. If you try to go further afield, you’ll die.”

On December 22, 2001, Richard Reid – otherwise known as the Shoe Bomber- attempted to detonate his explosive-packed shoes whole aboard an American Airlines flight from Paris to Miami. He was subdued by fellow passengers on the plane, which was diverted to Boston, Massachusetts, where it landed safely. Reid was later sentenced to three life terms plus 110 years in prison without parole. In this video, fellow passengers recall what happened on the flight. One passenger recalls: “The stewardess at one point said ‘Pass belts forward’ and people sort of from the back of the cabin who had really seen what had happened were taking off belts and all passing them forward and they were tying up the… you know, they were tying him up with these belts.”

The 2008 Mumbai Attacks consisted of twelve coordinated shooting and bombing attacks across Mumbai that took place from November 26 to November 29, 2008. The attacks, carried out by Lashkar-e-Taiba, a terrorist group operating out of Pakistan, left 164 people dead and over 300 others wounded. One of the attacks took place at the Taj Mahal Palace and Tower, a hotel just next to the Taj Mahal. In this video, an employee of the hotel, Hussain Rizvi, discusses what it was like for him on the day of the attack. Trapped on the second floor with three American tourists, Rizvi felt it his personal mission to keep the guests alive: “I made one and only one attempt to escape from the smoke. We went through the smoke and when we got to the first floor, we saw the exit was barricaded.” The group then retreated to a pantry on the second floor. When the guests started to panic, Rizvi remembers: “I held the door tightly and I had to avoid them from of course trying anything.”

On October 12, 2000, the USS Cole was attacked by suicide bombers in the port of Aden, Yemen, while refueling. Al Qaeda later claimed responsibility for the attack, which killed 17 sailors and injured another 39. Chief Petit Officer Sean Taitt remembers being injured in the bombing: “It took me hours to get just to the second deck from the third deck. It should only take you maybe 30 seconds up the ladder well.” With his leg badly damaged, Taitt says of his inability to help his fellow sailors: “At that point, I felt that I had failed rather than being a survivor.”
