Mariano Rivera was a professional baseball player for the New York Yankees from 1995 to 2013. He is considered by many to be the greatest closer of all time. He is a thirteen-time All-Star and a five-time World Series Champion. In this video, Mariano Rivera sits down with Joe Buck of FOX Sports to discuss his career. Of his career in New York, Rivera says: “Being with the New York Yankees has been a blessing. Being part of the city of New York that have huge expectations – Being successful here has been something special.” Of his success on the mound: “Yes, I am a perfectionist. I think i was made for it. I was built for it. It never gets old when those two doors open and I see myself crossing the field. It’s business.”

On October 2, 1978, the New York Yankees traveled to Fenway Park to take on the Boston Red Sox in a one game playoff. Both teams had finished the season with ninety-nine wins, and were now playing for the American League East Pennant and a spot in the playoffs. Down 2-0, with two runners on base, shortstop Bucky Dent stepped up to the plate. Yankees Manager Bob Lemon recalls: “I wanted to pinch hit for him but I didn’t have anybody to play. Sometimes when players are injured, sometimes it’s a blessing”. After fouling a ball into his already injured foot, Dent hits a home run over the left field wall to put the Yankees ahead 3-2. Says Dent: “The home run that I hit was the biggest moment in my career”. The Yankees went on to defeat the Red Sox 5-4, ending another exciting chapter of a storied rivalry.

Della Arnold Root, the daughter of Chicago Cubs pitcher Charlie Root, discusses the controversial ball that her father pitched to Babe Ruth in the 1932 World Series that Ruth allegedly predicted he would hit into the stands. According to Root’s daughter, the idea that Ruth had called his shot was never in anybody’s head until it was printed in the papers four days after the game. When asked about it, Ruth said that he “would have been a fool to point on a pitcher like Root.” Nevertheless, this claim haunted Root’s career and, the day before he passed away, he told his daughter that, despite how much he loved the game, he “would only be remembered for something that never happened.”

Sports writers and baseball players such as Willie Mays, Tommy Lasorda and Yogi Berra talk about their relationships with Joe Dimaggio. Willie Mays talks about how Dimaggio was his icon as he was growing up playing baseball because he was talented in all parts of the game. Tommy Lasorda calls Dimaggio his hero and talks about how he knew everything about him including all of his statistics. Yogi Berra discusses Dimaggio’s playing style on the field and says that he did everything right and always hustled no matter the situation. Dimaggio played for 13 years with the New York Yankees from 1936 to 1949, but he is best known for his 56 game hitting streak, which still to this day, is the longest hitting streak in MLB history; and his marriage to Marilyn Monroe for less than a year in 1954.

In an ESPN SportsCentury documentary on Lou Gehrig’s life, David Blumenthal, one of Gehrig’s longtime friends, recounts the day Gehrig gave his famous farewell speech and–even if more than 60 years has passed since the speech–is moved to tears. Although Gehrig went on to live another two years after his farewell speech, Blumenthal refers to the day of his speech as “the last day of Lou Gehrig.”

Actor Sean Astin talks about one of his favorite movies, “The Pride of the Yankees.” Astin talks about how emotional the film is and how his mother cry whenever she sees it. “The Pride of the Yankees” is a tribute to the career of Lou Gehrig. The film came out in 1942, a year after the baseball legend had passed away–it was nominated for 11 Oscars at the 15th Academy Awards in 1943, winning one for Best Film Editor. Gehrig’s Yankees teammates, including Babe Ruth, played themselves in the film. The film ends with Gehrig’s famous farewell speech and particularly with the well-known line: “Today, I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the Earth.”

After 17 seasons in the MLB, in which he was one of the best players in the league, Lou Gehrig ended his illustrious career on May 2, 1939 when he took himself out of the New York Yankees lineup in a game against the Detroit Tigers. Gehrig felt weakened through the first month of the 1939 season and fellow players remember him not playing like he always had. Although he did not know it at the time, Lou Gehrig had amyotrophic later sclerosis (ALS), which would later be referred to as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Although he died two years later in 1941, his career will forever be remembered. Gehrig was the first MLB player to have his uniform number retired.

Keith Olbermann interviews Babe Dahlgren about the day he replaced Lou Gehrig–ending Gehrig’s streak of 2,130 consecutive games played, the record for most consecutive games played at the time. Dahlgren describes the feeling of the dugout on the day he replaced Gehrig and talks about how he failed to convince Gehrig to return to the game and keep his streak alive. Gehrig started his historic streak on June 1, 1925 when he entered a game as a pinch hitter and played every game from that date to the first month of the 1939 MLB season. Throughout the 1938 season and into the 1939 season, Gehrig started to become weakened by an undiagnosed disease, which would later be named Lou Gehrig’s disease. After a poor performance in the first month of the 1939 season, Gehrig told his manager, Joe McCarthy, that he was going to bench himself. On May 2, 1939, Ellsworth “Babe” Dahlgren replaced Gehrig in the lineup at first base.
