In this interview, a veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom, John Teetz, discusses the impact that his military service had on his relationships and his personality. Teetz describes that the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks occurred while he was still in training yet this event made him more driven in his mental preparation for war. Once Teetz was stationed outside of Baghdad for reconnaissance, the friends he made amongst fellow soldiers became the best part of his Iraq experience. Teetz also credits his involvement in the United States military for making him a more responsible man.

Captain Ed “RIV” Hrivnak of the U.S. Air Force Reserve describes his experience of Operation Iraqi Freedom: “What my crew saw was a very up-close, personal human experience.” Hrivnak and his team took care of wounded soldiers on their plane–culminating in his unit evacuating 7,000 people within five months. U.S. President George W. Bush authorized Operation Iraqi Freedom to rid Iraq of the dictator Saddam Hussein and his alleged weapons of mass destruction on March 19, 2003. After Hrivnak’s time in Iraq, he believes, “War is not this glorious thing.” When he returned from his service, he published a book on what he had seen in Iraq, titled “Wounded: A Legacy of Operation Iraqi Freedom” in order to inform the public on the Iraq War: “It seems like America…has forgotten that there was a war going on.” Hrivnak’s book was published on May 21, 2013.

Scott Mcclellan, a former White House press secretary, is interviewed about his decision to testify before Congress on what has been known as “Plamegate” and the Scooter Libby Trial. Mcclellan discusses why he decided to voluntarily testify, his opinion on going to war with Iraq over the alleged weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and the scandalous outing of CIA operations officer Valerie Plame. After Plame was outed by journalist Robert Novak, allegations surfaced that people in the Bush Administration were responsible for this incident because Plame’s husband had reported that he could find no serious threats of WMDs in Iraq. In this video, Mcclellan analyzes the Plame affair further and shares his insider’s knowledge on the scandal.

Veteran Ian Welch recalls what happened to him while waiting to storm across the Diyala Bridge and seize Baghdad when an artillery round exploded behind him. Welch explains that he went on to complete his mission, as well as two more combat tours in Iraq, despite a list of symptoms that would later leave him completely disabled. Welch discusses how his life has changed since the explosion and thanks his girlfriend Katie is helping him cope. The Iraq War officially ended on December 15, 2011 with US Troops pulling out on December 18, though some remained until the end of the month.

He discusses the disappointment of finding out more troops were being sent to Iraq, increasing the length of his deployment, and remembers the specifies of the missions he was a part of. On December 18, 2011 the majority of US troops left Iraq, with the rest leaving by the end of the month. The Iraq War officially ended on December 15, 2011.
