Onstage at the Madison Square Garden celebration of Pete Seeger’s 90th birthday, Bruce Springsteen gives a moving tribute to Seeger, specifically honoring Seeger’s long participation in progressive causes. “Despite Pete’s somewhat benign, grandfatherly appearance, he is a creature of a stubborn, defiant, and nasty optimism,” Springsteen says. Seeger was a trade-union supporter, a civil rights marcher, an anti-war demonstrator, and an environmental activist. Pete Seeger passed away January 28, 2014 at the age of 94. In 2006 Springsteen released an entire album of songs associated with Seeger.

The documentary, released in the summer of 2013, is made up entirely of fan videos, either of Springsteen performing or of fans talking about the musician. Springsteen describes running up to the fan and then sharing a drink with him.

Bruce Springsteen talks about his early days of learning to love rock-n-roll and the excitement of performing in a 1978 interview. Springsteen was an established star by this time, albeit not a mainstream icon like he became after 1984’s Born in the USA album. Bruce Springsteen gave the keynote speech at the 2012 South by Southwest festival. One topic: The influence that 1960s folk-rock band the Animals had on him. Part of the mid-1960s British Invasion, the Animals were popular during Springsteen’s teenage years. Springsteen plays a portion of “We Gotta Get out of This Place,” a song that captures many of the same images and emotions that Springsteen has highlighted in his own music.

John Lennon was killed on December 8, 1980. Bruce Springsteen performed that night and the next at the Spectrum in Philadelphia, opening with “Born to Run.” This recording is from the night of December 9. He closed the show that night with “Twist and Shout,” a shout out to an iconic Beatles recording, known for Lennon’s energetic vocals. John Lennon was assassinated by Mark David Chapman, a man he had earlier signed a copy of Double Fantasy for.
