The Orangeburg massacre took place on February 8, 1968, when a group of about 150 protestors from South Carolina State University had gathered to protest racial segregation at the local bowling alley. South Carolina Highway Patrol Officers responded to the scene and opened fire on protestors, killing three and wounding another twenty-eight. The three protestors who passed were Samuel Hammond, Henry Smith and Delano Middleton. The nine officers brought up on charges following the shooting were all acquitted. On November 7, 1967, Democrat Carl B. Stokes was elected Mayor of Cleveland, Ohio. Stokes was the first African American to be elected mayor of a major U.S. city. In this video, Stokes speaks to his supporters following his victory, saying: “I can find no more fitting way to end this appeal by saying to all of you, in the most serious and in the most meaningful way that I can, that truly never before have I ever known to the extent that I know tonight the full meaning of the words ‘God Bless America.’”

“I’ve always been at war with a system, not people”. On October 1, 1962, James Meredith became the first African-American student admitted to the University of Mississippi. Meredith’s enrollment sparked protests and riots at the University’s campus, causing President Kennedy to call in troops from the U.S. Marshals, U.S. Army and Mississippi Army National Guard to get things under control. Reflecting on his admission, Meredith states: “My job was finished once I put the President of the United States in the position where he had to use the military might of the United States of America to protect my rights as a citizen. Everything else was somebody else’s job”.

The radio station was in the same building as the headquarters of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, whose leader was Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. King was a frequent visitor to the station, where he often spoke on-air.

Lee Pfund, a pitcher on the Dodgers when Jackie Robinson joined the team, discusses Robinson’s legacy and sacrifice by joining the Dodgers. Pfund was one of Robinson’s few friends on the team, and often talked about their faith and family on long bus rides to play games. Jackie Robinson was the first African-American to play Major League Baseball.
