A miner, who was trapped underground for two months in the Sane José Copper-Gold Mine in Copiapó, Chile in 2010, gives his first interview after being rescued. Nicknamed “Super Mario” after coming out of the mine very energized and presenting gifts of rocks to his rescuers, Mario Sepulveda talks about reconnecting with his family after the 69 days he spent underground with 32 other miners. He describes how he wrote a letter to his children in which he wrote that he lived a happy life and that their mother would take care of them. Many of “Los 33,” as they were called, thought that they would not make it out of the collapsed mineshaft alive, but in the end, each of the 33 trapped miners was rescued successfully. Sepulveda describes the sight of the drill poking into the cave in which they were located as a miracle and said that the miners “cried and thanked God” when it happened.

Jeff Hart, Matt Staffel, Doug Reeves and Jorge Herrera are all drillers that helped to rescue the 33 miners trapped underground during 2010′s Copiapó mining incident that took place in Chile. Here, a reporter interviews the four men on various aspects of their rescue mission. They discuss the type of equipment and unique methods they used which allowed them to rescue the men in 33 days, a much shorter time than was originally predicted for the mission. When asked how this experience has changed them, Staffel expressed it as “the most important thing” he’s ever done. The drillers also put emphasis on how much more they now appreciate the time they spend with their loved ones since the miners could not be with their families for such a long period of time.

Many safety precautions were necessary for the rescue of the miners because quickly changing environmental factors could have lead to many serious health problems, even death. These safety precautions included ingesting a liquid concoction high in sugar, minerals, and potassium six hours before being rescued, swallowing an aspirin to avoid blood clots, and wearing sunglasses to prevent retinal damage. After more than two months underground, all 33 miners were successfully rescued in good medical condition.
