Olympic gold medalist Billy Mills recalls winning the 10,000 meter run at the 1964 Tokyo Summer Olympics in one of the greatest upsets in sports history. Mills, an Oglala Lakota from Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota, was the second American Indian to win an Olympic gold medal and the first American to win the 10,000 meter dash. His triumphs over hypoglycemia and suicidal thoughts inspire him to help others overcome their own hurdles in life.

Pelé, a retired Brazilian footballer, is generally believed to be the greatest to have ever played the game. In this video, Pelé talks about the upcoming World Cup in Brazil in the summer of 2014, as well as memories of past World Cups. Pelé learned about the importance of the World Cup at a young age. He recalls watching his father crying when he was 9 or 10 years old. When Pelé asked his father what was wrong, his father responded: “Brazil lost the World Cup.” In response, Pelé recalls: “I don’t know what to say to him. I say ‘No don’t worry. Don’t cry. I’m gonna win one World Cup for you.’ Then this was 8 years later, I was 17, I was in Sweden and Brazil won the World Cup.” In Sweden in 1958, Pelé played in four matches and scored six goals. He later went on to lead Brazil to World Cup victories in 1962 and 1970.

He wishes the gambling never happened and it was just “a bad dream.” On August 24, 1989, Rose accepted permanent ineligibility from baseball and the MLB stopped investigating accusations that Rose had gambled on baseball games, which Rose denied until 2004.

In this documentary narrated by Maya Angelou, tennis player Althea Gibson reflects on her successful career in the late 1950s and beyond. Gibson describes her experience at Wimbledon in 1957, during which she became the first black woman to win the tennis tournament. She reflects on the anxiety she felt while competing and the excitement of receiving the trophy from the Queen of England. In addition to Gibson’s influential tennis career, the documentary reflects on Gibson’s efforts in singing, acting and golf.

In this segment from “Althea Gibson: A Documentary,” Gibson is praised for becoming the first black woman to win the U.S. Open Women’s Singles Championship and Wimbledon in 1957. Fellow tennis players, such as Dr. Harold Freeman, discuss how Gibson’s triumphs were exceptional because tennis was previously offered exclusively to wealthy white people. Billie Jean King, another tennis player, explains how Gibson had to deal with the harsh racial climate of the ’50s and yet it did not affect her athletic prowess on the court. Gibson’s accomplishments broke boundaries for black athletes, and she became a symbol for the civil rights movements.

Sports writers and baseball players such as Willie Mays, Tommy Lasorda and Yogi Berra talk about their relationships with Joe Dimaggio. Willie Mays talks about how Dimaggio was his icon as he was growing up playing baseball because he was talented in all parts of the game. Tommy Lasorda calls Dimaggio his hero and talks about how he knew everything about him including all of his statistics. Yogi Berra discusses Dimaggio’s playing style on the field and says that he did everything right and always hustled no matter the situation. Dimaggio played for 13 years with the New York Yankees from 1936 to 1949, but he is best known for his 56 game hitting streak, which still to this day, is the longest hitting streak in MLB history; and his marriage to Marilyn Monroe for less than a year in 1954.
