Slobodan Miolsevic was the President of Serbia from 1989 to 1997 and President of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia from 1997 to 2000. In 1999, Milosevic was charged by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) with war crimes including genocide and crimes against humanity for his role in the wars in Bosnia, Croatia and Kosovo. Milosevic resigned his presidency in 2000, and was arrested in 2001 and sent to the ICTY to stand trial for war crimes in The Hague, Netherlands. Miolsevic claimed the Tribunal was illegal because it had not received the consent of the UN General Assembly, and thus refused to appoint counsel for himself. Milosevic represented himself for the five-year trial, and passed away in his cell in 2006 before the trial had concluded. This video shows footage from Milosevic’s first appearance at The Hague.
