Hear Londoners recall the Great Fog of 1952. The “Pea Souper” was an anticyclone that rocked London for several days. 12,000 people died during the fog and Winston Churchill’s leadership was questioned.  The fog lasted from December 5th until December 9th of the year.

In this audio recording, former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill made a speech to incite confidence and inspiration to his countrymen on August 20, 1940 as the United Kingdom prepared for a German invasion during World War II. The Allies had suffered some demoralizing defeats in the past few months but Churchill tells his country that the Allies are looking stronger than ever. He states one of his most famous lines: “Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few” with the Royal Air Force (RAF), who were fighting the Battle of Britain at the time, being “the few.” The success in the following battle by the Allies’ aircrew was thought to be in part due to these encouraging words spoken by this iconic British leader.

Winston Churchill delivered his “This Was Their Finest Hour” speech to the to the House of Commons in the United Kingdom on  June 18, 1940 during World War II’s Battle of France when Germans had successfully invaded France and British and French forces were in retreat to the sea. In the peroration, Churchill justifies England’s alliance with France and continued fighting in the war for the purpose of protecting values important to the United Kingdom such as freedom and maintaining a Christian civilization: “But if we fail, then the whole world, including the United States, including all that we have known and cared for, will sink into the abyss of a new dark age made more sinister, and perhaps more protracted, by the lights of perverted science. Let us therefore brace ourselves to our duties, and so bear ourselves, that if the British Empire and its Commonwealth last for a thousand years, men will still say, This was their finest hour.”

This is the audio of Winston Churchill’s “We Shall Fight on the Beaches” speech delivered to the English House of Commons on June 4, 1940 during the Battle of France when Germans had successfully invaded France and British and French forces were in retreat to the sea. At the time, morale in Britain over the war was very low. Churchill’s speech warned of a possible attack on England by Nazi Germany but confidently promised to the English people eventual victory: “We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender.” The famous peroration begins at ten minutes and 16 seconds into the video.
