The Mirabal Sisters – Patria, Dedé, Minerva and Maria Teresa, opposed the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo in the Dominican Republic during the 1950s and 1960s. The sisters helped to form a group called the Movement of the Fourteenth of June, and were known within the group as Las Mariposas (The Butterflies). On November 25, 1960, Patria, Minerva and Maria Teresa were murdered by Trujillo’s men. In this video, eldest sister Dedé, as well as the husbands and children of Patria, Minerva and Maria Teresa, remember these brave women. Of the day they were killed, Dedé recalls: “It was a terrible day, because even though we expected it, we never thought the crime would actually be carried out.” Of their deaths, Maria Teresa’s husband, Leandro Guzman, says: “They fertilized the earth with their blood to bring about Trujillo’s end.”

Rafael Trujillo was assassinated in May of 1961.
