Joseph Goebbels secretary recalls what he was like in the office in the forthcoming film A German Life. Goebbels was Hitler’s minister of a Propaganda. It was on November 16, 1941 that Goebbels released his “screed of hate,” in the German magazine Das Reich that “The Jews wanted the war, and now they have it”—referring to the Nazi propaganda scheme to shift the blame for the world war onto European Jewry, thereby giving the Nazis a rationalization for the so-called Final Solution.

Elisheva Zimet Stern and Rita Weiss, survivors of the Holocaust, describe what happened when they were deported from Hungary and taken to the concentration camps. The Nazis first occupied Hungary on March 20, 1954 and later sent over 400,000 Hungarian Jews to the concentration camps, where an estimated 90% were killed.

During World War II, Raoul Wallenberg, a Swedish businessman and diplomat, saved the lives of tens of thousands of Jews living in Nazi-occupied Hungary. While working as Sweden’s special envoy in Budapest from July to December of 1944, Wallenberg issued protective passports and sheltered Jews in buildings designated as Swedish territory. On January 17, 1945, Wallenberg was arrested by the Soviets and disappeared.

Adolf Eichmann was a lieutenant colonel in the Nazi Army and one of the lead organizers of the holocaust. Eichmann was responsible for coordinating the logistics of of sending Jews to ghettos and extermination camps across Easter Europe during World War II. After the war, Eichmann managed to escape to Austria and then to Argentina, where he began a new life under an assumed name. In 1960, Israeli intelligence tracked him down and captured him, bringing him to Israel to stand trial on charges including war crimes and crimes against the Jewish people. Eichmann’s trial was the first trial to be televised. He was found guilty and on December 15, 1961, was sentenced to die by hanging. His sentence was carried out on May 31, 1962. On October 14, 1943, approximately 600 prisoners attempted to escape from the Sobibor extermination camp on the outskirts of Sobibor, Poland. Of the 600 who revolted, around half were able to escape and fifty of those were able to avoid being recaptured. In this video, survivors of the Sobibor camp discuss their participation in the uprising. One survivor, Chaim Engel, recalls having to kill a German soldier in order for the plan to work: “Someone gave me from the warehouse a kitchen knife, and I went together with the other fellow and went in and we killed the German and I jabbed him with the knife and I say ‘This is for my father, for my brother, for all the Jews that you killed.’ And we killed him.”
