On October 14, 1947, Chuck Yeager broke the sound barrier flying the X-1 at Mach 1.07 at an altitude of 45,000 ft (13,700 m)over the Rogers Dry Lake in the Mojave Desert.

On the ground, no one had ever heard a sonic boom before. It rattled the photographs of the pilots who had died facing the demon and it was assumed that Yeager had exploded and there would be another funeral for another forgotten test pilot. It took a few moments for everyone to realize the sound barrier had finally been broken and the space age had arrived for mankind.

Eileen Collins is a retired NASA astronaut and retired United States Air Force colonel who became the first female pilot and first female commander of a Space Shuttle. On February 3, 1995, Collins piloted the space shuttle Discovery from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida as part of mission STS-63. Collins later served as commander of mission STS-93 in July 1999 and mission STS-114 in July of 2005. In this video, Collins talks about her childhood dream of being a pilot and how she worked to achieve that dream, as well as what it meant to be the first female shuttle pilot.

American astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin spent about two and a half hours on the surface of the moon with Armstrong being the first man to set foot on the moon on July 21, 1969. Executive director of Pride at Work, a nonprofit organization that aims to seek full equality for LGBT workers, thanks late astronaut Sally Ride. Ride revealed through her obituary that she had maintained a secret relationship with Tam O’Shaunghnessy, an educator and childhood friend of Ride’s, for twenty-seven years. O’Shaughnessy is currently the Chief Executive Officer of the company, Sally Ride Science. Ride passed away on July 23, 2012 due to pancreatic cancer.
