Merryman describes Monroe talking with much “gusto” and “vitality,” but at the same time he got a sense that she was struggling with her fame and her personal life. Monroe, whose real name was Norma Jeane Mortenson, was an actress and singer during the 1950s, who became famous as a national sex symbol. She starred in such films as, “The Seven Year Itch” and “Some Like It Hot.” Monroe died of an apparent suicide on April 15, 1962 from an overdose on barbiturates.

Strasberg discusses the contradiction in Monroe’s character between her brazen, confident nature and her emotional instability. In this video, Strasberg mentions Monroe’s notorious problems with drugs and heartache, but concludes that Monroe was “a very gutsy, courageous lady.”

Distinguished British photographer Cecil Beaton and his New York-based assistant Ed Pfizenmaier share memories on their famous 1956 shoot with Marilyn Monroe. Both men were impressed by how beautiful she was in-person and her “variety of moves” in front of the camera. Pfizenmaier explains how both he and Beaton knew it would be a successful shoot from the onset because Monroe walked in and immediately discarded her shoes: “I kind of adore somebody that throws their shoes off…in other words, she wanted to work!”
