“They thought that the bullet would silence us, but they failed”. At age 11, Malala Yousafzai, a Pakistani student, became an outspoken proponent of education for girls. Her advocacy made her a threat to the Taliban, who tried to assassinate her on October 9, 2012, while she was riding a school bus. Recalling the day she was shot, Yousafzai says: “I didn’t see those men. I just could see there is no one. There used to be a huge crowd on that road, and on that day there was no one”.
