On January 21, 1977, President Jimmy Carter pardoned hundreds of thousands of men who had evaded the Vietnam War draft by either fleeing the country or failing to register. The pardon occurred on President Carter’s first day in office and was the fulfillment of a campaign promise. Not included in the pardon were military deserters. Historians and former news anchors discuss the life of the 39th President of the United States (1977-1981), Jimmy Carter. This video follows Carter’s life from his early childhood through the troubles he faced as president all the way to his post-presidency, which many historians consider to be a very successful one. In fact, Carter won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for helping to find peaceful solutions to many international conflicts. During his presidency, Carter created the Departments: Education and Energy–but at the end of his presidency in 1980, he faced many problems, including the Iran Hostage Crisis, the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, and the Three Mile Island nuclear accident. Due to of all of the problems he was faced with solving, his popularity declined when he could not find solutions to all of them. This led to him being beaten by Ronald Reagan in the 1980 presidential election after only four years in office.

In an interview with Piers Morgan on CNN, former president, Jimmy Carter, talks about the truth behind the 2012 film, “Argo,” the political thriller film directed by Ben Affleck that won Best Picture at the 85th Academy Awards. Carter was president when the events of “Argo” took place, which was when a fake movie crew flew to Tehran, Iran to film a fake movie, “Argo,” so that they could rescue six U.S. diplomats during the Iran Hostage Crisis in 1981. Carter says that he loved the film and that most of it was accurate, but that the main difference was that 90% of the contributions to the plan to rescue the hostages were conceived by the Canadian government, whereas the movie gives almost full credit to the U.S. government.

President Jimmy Carter addresses the public in January of 1979 during his “Crisis of Confidence” speech, also known as the “Malaise” speech. This video is a clip of his speech in which Carter diagnoses a “crisis of confidence” among Americans. He states how the U.S. people are more worried about what the government is doing to solve things and not worried enough about how the U.S. people can help themselves. He goes on to say that the issues with energy shortages and inflation can be fixed if the nation could simply unite as a whole. Carter describes the responses he got from American citizens when asked about what the pressing issues in U.S. politics are: One citizen, claiming that there is a lack of leadership within the presidency, stated: “If you lead, Mr. President, we will follow.” This speech, though well-received at first, later lead to fervent backlash as people believed Carter was accusing the nation of the widespread energy crisis instead of taking full command of his executive position and resolving it.
