The Grateful Dead were an American rock band from California that first came together in 1965. The band was known for live performances of long musical improvisation, and have sold more than 35 million albums worldwide. In 1994, the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The band’s founding members were Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Ron “Pigpen” Mckernan, Phil Lesh and Bill Kreutzmann. In this video, the band sits down to discuss the band’s history and progression. When asked how the Grateful Dead have managed to stay current, Weir says: “I don’t think we’ve stayed current. I don’t think we ever were current. I think we’ve been sort of singular in our whole endeavor, and will probably stay that way. I mean, all we’re trying to do is just satisfy our own standards. They’re pretty steep.” When asked about changes in the music, Garcia responds: “It changes as we change. I mean, the musicians over the years, the musicians have all gotten to be better, and our experience with each other has gotten to be greater and our experience at doing the Grateful Dead music, whatever that is, has gotten to be – there’s more time we put in, so it’s something we’re getting to be almost good at. But for us it keeps opening up in front of us. We would never have imagined we’d be playing the music we’re playing now two years ago or five years ago or whatever.”
