Benazir Bhutto served as the Prime Minister of Pakistan for two non-consecutive terms from 1988-1990 and from 1993-1996. She was the eldest daughter of former Pakistani prime minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. With her election in 1988, Bhutto became the first female leader of a Muslim country. In this clip from “Bhutto,” a documentary about Benazir Bhutto’s life, the former Prime Minister of Pakistan, her children and husband describe the days leading up to her assassination on December 27, 2007. Bhutto’s daughters, Bakhtawar and Asifa, recall how Bhutto believed that her life was in God’s hands now and how she was prepared to die. Asifa thinks that Bhutto understood the risks of returning to Rawalpindi, Pakistan in December but Bhutto returned anyway–she needed to support her people. Her husband, Asif Ali Zardari, explains how he begged Bhutto not to go back Rawalpindi because they knew it would be too dangerous. The family is understandably emotional in their descriptions of their last days with her and they clearly all understand why she had to leave for her ill-fated trip.

In a news segment following the assassination of Benazir Bhutto, thousands of Pakistanis are seen mourning their former prime minister’s death in the streets of the cities of the country. Benazir Bhutto was the 11th Prime Minister of Pakistan and served two terms: 1988-1990 and 1993-1996. Bhutto went into exile in Dubai in 1999 after corruption charges were brought against her and her government in 1996. After nine years in exile, Bhutto returned to Pakistan in 2007 after the corruption charges were dropped, but was assassinated later that year at a political rally where she was preparing to run for prime minister again.
