Kikue Shiota shares her experience on surviving the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, Japan on August 6, 1945 by the U.S. during World War II. At the time of the atomic bombing, Shiota was 21 years old and she was two kilometers away from the center of the attack. Shiota recalls that a shocking, bright light overwhelmed Hiroshima and an oily black rain shortly followed. That day, Shiota and her younger sister had to travel amongst piles of corpses and burning buildings in order to find her missing siblings. The two found their brother with the skin of his legs dragging behind him and they found their sister’s clothes burned into the road.

In August of 1945, the United States dropped atomic bombs on the cities of Nagasaki and Hiroshima. Toyomi Hashimoto, a survivor of this tragedy, remembers it vividly. Hashimoto was 21-years old at the time and a mother to one son, and pregnant with another. She recalls the hectic and terrifying day of the bombings as she describes not knowing if her son was dead or alive. Hashimoto also describes the following days in Nagasaki as families searched for loved ones, the after-effects of the nuclear bombs took their toll and friends began to die from the bombs’ effects one-by-one. Many years later, Hashimoto is still haunted by that day as her children continue to be born with life-threatening illnesses from the bombs. She pledges that her life’s mission is to keep sharing her story about the harmful effects of atomic bombs in the hopes that they will never be used again.

Aiko Kori describes surviving the atomic bomb attack on the Japanese city of Nagasaki during World War II. Only 17 years old at the time, Kori recalls being mistaken for a corpse, narrowly escaping cremation, and picking maggots out of her wounds–among other horrors. The bomb dropped on Nagasaki by the United states on August 9, 1945; the second atomic bomb dropped in history and the last to date.

In this interview from 2011, Dr. Hiromi Hasai describes the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, Japan on August 6, 1945 by the U.S. during World War II. Hasai explains that he was shocked with the tens of thousands of dead bodies that surrounded him in the city and he describes how everything in Hiroshima was destroyed that day. After surviving the Atomic-bombing, Hasai kept his stories about the attack a secret while he conducted research on nuclear physics. Yet after 2008, Hasai felt that it was necessary to discuss his experience as a survivor so that people could remember the tragedy. Through his firsthand account of the bombing and his years of research, Hasai believes that the only purpose that nuclear research serves is total destruction of human life.
