Benazir Bhutto served as the Prime Minister of Pakistan for two non-consecutive terms from 1988-1990 and from 1993-1996. She was the eldest daughter of former Pakistani prime minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. With her election in 1988, Bhutto became the first female leader of a Muslim country. On September 26, 1960, John F. Kennedy–a young senator from Massachusetts at the time–and
Vice President Richard Nixon squared off in a hour-long debate–the first-ever televised presidential debate. While Kennedy looked confident, healthy and dapper; Nixon seemed sickly and underweight from a recent hospitalization. Approximately 74 million viewers noticed the difference. The debate rocketed Kennedy into the electoral spotlight and solidified the important role of television in politics. When Kennedy won the presidential election in November of 1960, he was reported to have said, “It was the TV more than anything else that turned the tide.”

Pulitzer Prize winner and journalist Bob Woodward remembers the Watergate scandal, his role in reporting on it and how it changed how we perceived the presidency. Specifically, Woodward highlights the “dirty tricks” used by the Nixon administration. Tricks such as the Watergate break-in and the leaking of then vice-presidential candidate Edmund Muskie’s medical records so that he would get dropped from the Democratic ticket. Woodward is left with the impression that President Nixon’s influence went so far that he could be sensed “in the ballot booth, with every voter, tampering with his or her vote.”

Former mayor of Boston, Kevin White, talks about almost losing in the 1967 general election to Louise Day Hicks, a Boston School Committee member who was anti-desegregation and “anti-black.” The 1965 Racial Imbalance Act, which desegregated the public schools in Boston via court-ordered busing of children into different neighborhood schools, had made race a key issue during the election. It led to the Boston busing crisis involving widespread and violent public protests throughout the city. White won by 12,000 votes and served as mayor of Boston from 1968 to 1984.

In this analysis of the 2009 Iranian Election, Christiane Amanpour, a correspondent for CNN, discusses the favorability of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s candidacy because of his campaigning efforts. Amanpour describes how Ahmadinejad had overwhelming support because he traveled around Iran to rural areas among the poor populations in the country. As a result of Ahmadinejad’s popularity with the voters, Amanpour reports that there would be no real fear of cheating or rigging. However, the election did encounter some fraud charges and protests for reform because the “clerical elite” had the power to contest the election. Amanpour described that even though the opposition threatens Ahmadinejad’s re-election, Ahmadinejad is supported by his Iranian people to serve a second term as president.

Historians and former news anchors discuss the life of the 39th President of the United States (1977-1981), Jimmy Carter. This video follows Carter’s life from his early childhood through the troubles he faced as president all the way to his post-presidency, which many historians consider to be a very successful one. In fact, Carter won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for helping to find peaceful solutions to many international conflicts. During his presidency, Carter created the Departments: Education and Energy–but at the end of his presidency in 1980, he faced many problems, including the Iran Hostage Crisis, the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, and the Three Mile Island nuclear accident. Due to of all of the problems he was faced with solving, his popularity declined when he could not find solutions to all of them. This led to him being beaten by Ronald Reagan in the 1980 presidential election after only four years in office.

Attached is a set of materials prepared for the transition to your second administration.

The first paper, entitled “Planning the Transition” identifies items you may wish to consider in order to ensure maximum flexibility in shaping the policies, structure and people of your new administration. It is basically a paper designed to prevent events from getting out of control during the transition period. A second paper entitled “Presidential Objectives” sketches out a series of objectives around which you might wish to organize your second administration. The themes of peace, prosperity and trust are identified as the key elements and specific policy and programmatic suggestions are identified under each of these three themes. If you choose to pursue these objectives, some brief organizing principles are identified. The third paper entitled “Modern Mid-term Transitions: The Implications for President Ford” was prepared by the Institute of Politics at the Kennedy School of Government under the direction of Jonathan Moore. That paper examines in some detail mid-term transitions form Eisenhower to Nixon. It concludes that most mid-term transitions have not been successful because the re-elected President lost his chance for shaping events in the direction he wished. The first 11 pages of the study, which summarize previous transitions, may be of interest to you.
