Brazilian soccer icon Pele scores his 1000th goal on November 19, 1969. Pandemonium ensues.

It was a major milestone in an illustrious career that included three World Cup championships.

Pele, considered one of the greatest soccer players ever to take the field, was born Edson Arantes do Nascimento in Tres Coracos, Brazil, in 1940. He acquired the nickname Pele during his childhood though the name has no meaning in his native Portuguese. When he was a teenager, he played for a minor league soccer club in Bauru in Sao Paulo state and in 1956 joined the major league Santos Football Club in the city of Sao Paulo, playing inside left forward. Two years later, he led the Brazilian national team to victory in the World Cup. Pele, who was only 17 years old, scored two goals to defeat Sweden in the final.

The Shot heard round the world happened on October 4th as part of the 1951 National League pennant. Outfield Bobby Thompson hit the walk off home run to give the New York Giants (later moved to San Francisco) the victory off of Brooklyn Dodgers (later moving to LA) pitcher Ralph Branca.  Called the shot heard round the world, the radio broadcasters chant: “The Giants win the Pennant, The Giants win the Pennant” became part of broadcasting history and a cultural touch tone.

Hear Julius Erving introduce Moses Malone into Basketball Hall of Fame and then hear Moses’ speech during his induction speech. Malone was the first player to go directly from High School in the NBA, where he dominated.  Malone died at the age of 60 in 2015.

Basketball great Darryl Dawkins talks about how he got the name “chocolate thunder” from none other than Stevie Wonder. He also talks about how he named his dunks.  Dawkins died on August 27, 2015 at the age of 15—too soon.

Olympic gold medalist Billy Mills recalls winning the 10,000 meter run at the 1964 Tokyo Summer Olympics in one of the greatest upsets in sports history. Mills, an Oglala Lakota from Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota, was the second American Indian to win an Olympic gold medal and the first American to win the 10,000 meter dash. His triumphs over hypoglycemia and suicidal thoughts inspire him to help others overcome their own hurdles in life.
