Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner is the company’s most fuel-efficient airliner, designed to be 20% more fuel efficient than the Boeing 767. The Dreamliner took its maiden flight on December 15, 2009. This video shows footage from that day and discusses the testing process that the Dreamliner must go through in order to be certified. Mike Fromm, who overseas flight test engineering for Boeing’s commercial aircraft, speaks to the testing process: “Here at Boeing test and evaluation, there are three major areas that we concentrate on in trying to get the airplane ready for service. The first area is certification through the FAA and trying to get the plane certified, and the follow-on certification agencies. THe other big area that we do concentrate on very specifically is safety. Safety of our crews, and safety of the airplane, and getting it safe to operate in service. And the third area is the where we take the volume, the huge volume of data that we collect while flight testing the airplane, and reduce that data down into the flight manuals that the airlines and the pilots of those airlines will utilize to operate the airplane.”

On October 19, 1987, stock markets around the world crashed, a day that has become known as Black Monday. The Dow Jones saw the single largest one-day percentage decline in its history. When asked how the 2008 crash compares to that of 1987, Stephen Guilfoyle of Meridian Equity Partners responds: “As an old-timer, I can’t even call anything since ’87 a crash. Because it’s just not. There’s not the panic, there’s not the fear, there’s not the dread.” On recalling the exhaustion he experienced, Guilfoyle says: “I could not keep up with my order flow… Things were done manually at that time. There were no computers.”

President Jimmy Carter addresses the public in January of 1979 during his “Crisis of Confidence” speech, also known as the “Malaise” speech. This video is a clip of his speech in which Carter diagnoses a “crisis of confidence” among Americans. He states how the U.S. people are more worried about what the government is doing to solve things and not worried enough about how the U.S. people can help themselves. He goes on to say that the issues with energy shortages and inflation can be fixed if the nation could simply unite as a whole. Carter describes the responses he got from American citizens when asked about what the pressing issues in U.S. politics are: One citizen, claiming that there is a lack of leadership within the presidency, stated: “If you lead, Mr. President, we will follow.” This speech, though well-received at first, later lead to fervent backlash as people believed Carter was accusing the nation of the widespread energy crisis instead of taking full command of his executive position and resolving it.
